From today – 1st October 2010, The National Minimum Wage rates will increase from:

£5.80 to £5.93 an hour for workers aged 21 and over

£4.83 to £4.92 an hour for workers aged 18 to 20

£3.57 to £3.64 an hour for workers aged 16 to 17

The rise is around the two per cent mark in each category. As promised, the government has extended the adult minimum wage rate to 21-year-olds from October 2010. Previously the qualifying age for the National Minimum Wage was 22.

Apprentice minimum wage – £2.50 per hour

The government also accepted a recommendation from the Low Pay Commission (LPC) to introduce an apprentice minimum wage of £2.50 per hour.

The new rate will apply to:

apprentices under 19

apprentices aged 19 and over, but in the first year of their apprenticeship

Helen Stacey, Head of Operations for Team Recruitment comments “the rise of 13p per hour for workers aged 21 and over is a sharp increase and will be difficult for some small businesses to stomach. At Team Recruitment we dont make any difference in the rates we pay different ages so someone aged 25 working alongside someone aged 18 doing the same job will be paid the same rate of £5.93 ph. We belive that if people are doing the same job they should be paid the same rate regardless of their age.”

For further information call the Team on 01202 445700 or 01243 816615.

Helen Stacey, Head of Operations at Team Recruitment comments “although its good news that salary increases for women were slightly higher than those for men, we are still some way behind due to decades of unequal pay. In my opinion, anyone doing a job – regardless of sex or age – should be paid the same as their colleagues doing the same job. For example the national minimum wage is currently lower for people aged under 22 at £4.83 ph compared to £5.80 (due to go up in October 2010) for over 22 year olds. However at Team Recruitment we pay the same rate to everyone regardless of age. If an 18 year old is doing the same job as a 24 year old then it cant be right that they are paid a different rate. All employers have a duty to ensure that their personnel are paid the correct and going market rate for the job they do regardless of sex”

Team Recruitment have offices in Poole and Chichester and supply temporary and permanent staff to Commercial, Engineering and Industrial companies across Dorset, Hampshire and West Sussex. For further information please call the team on 01202 445700 or 01243 816615

Team Recruitment recently delivered the prizes to their 2 winning clients who drew Spain as the winning team in the World Cup 2010 competition that they ran.

Ben Edwards from Park Engineering in Dorset and Steve Montague from Eurotek in West Sussex were the lucky recipients of a bottle of champagne and a voucher for £100 for dinner at Hotel Du Vin in Poole and Chassons in Chichester.

Helen Stacey from Team Recruitment comments “as the competition drew to a close we kept in touch with the clients who were still lucky enough to have their team left in the world cup. By the time it came to the last 4 teams playing our clients were becoming really competitive! The prizes are being delivered by Friday 23rd July with the clients being delighted with their wins” Steve from Eurotek said “yes I am extremley delighted, especially as the food at Cassons is wonderful. Like your service all ways first class and personal, a pleasure to deal with on a one to one basis and we couldnt ask for more”
