Hiring can feel straightforward… until it isn’t.
On paper, it’s simple. You need someone, you interview a few people, you make an offer. But in reality, I see businesses lose great candidates all the time because of small, avoidable mistakes.
As Commercial Manager, I work closely with clients on this every day, and honestly, it’s usually the same few things that trip people up.
Here are the main ones to watch out for.
Making the Interview Process Too Long
This is probably the biggest one.
If your process drags on for weeks, with multiple stages and slow feedback, you will lose good candidates. It’s as simple as that. The best people don’t sit around waiting.
On the flip side, rushing it too much isn’t great either. One quick chat and an offer can lead to the wrong hire.
What works better?
Keep it simple. Two or three stages, clear timelines, and quick decisions. You want to move efficiently without cutting corners.
Not Being Clear on What You Actually Need
I’ve seen this a lot. A role goes live, and then halfway through the process, the brief changes.
Suddenly you’re looking for something completely different.
This confuses candidates and slows everything down.
What works better?
Be clear from the start. Know what’s essential and what’s just a bonus. It makes the whole process smoother and more focused.
Focusing Too Much on “Like for Like” Experience
It’s easy to look for someone who has done the exact same job before. It feels like the safe option.
But it can also mean you miss out on people with the right attitude and transferable skills who could be even better long term.
What works better?
Look at the bigger picture. Skills can be taught. Attitude and work ethic are harder to find.
Poor Communication
This is a big one, and candidates notice it straight away.
Not replying, long gaps between interviews, or no feedback at all… it doesn’t leave a great impression.
And remember, candidates are deciding on you as well.
What works better?
Keep people updated. Even a quick message goes a long way.
Not Selling the Role
The market is competitive. Good candidates have options.
If your interview is just you asking questions and not talking about what you offer, you’re missing a trick.
What works better?
Make it a two-way conversation. Talk about the team, the culture, and where the business is going. Give people a reason to be excited.
Ignoring Team Fit
Someone might look great on paper, but if they don’t fit with your team, it can cause problems down the line.
What works better?
Think about personality as well as experience. It makes a big difference long term.
Most hiring mistakes aren’t complicated. They come down to clarity, communication, and speed.
Get those right, and you’re already ahead of most businesses.
If you’re reviewing your hiring process or struggling to find the right people, I’m always happy to have a chat.
