CV Writing Tips
What to include on a CV:
- Your contact details
- Name, location (doesn’t have to be full home address), mobile number and email address
- Profile / summary
- Keep it short and sweet, briefly highlight any key skills, achievements or software you have used (relevant to the job role)
- Work experience
- Keep it chronological (starting with most recent role)
- Include: job title, company and dates
- Bullet point main responsibilities
- Education
- Keep it chronological (listing most recent qualification)
- Include: subject, institution, dates and grade(s) achieved
- Skills and achievements
- Skills – any specialist software you have used / are proficient in
- Achievements – any work or education related awards
- If you are going to list skills which may appear generic e.g. ‘leadership’, give an example of how you have proved this skill rather than just bullet-pointing
- Interests
- A great way to add some personality to your CV and can be a conversation opener at an interview
- References
- You can simply put ‘references are available upon request’ opposed to listing contact details at this stage
TIPS
- If you would like to add a ‘profile picture’ to your CV, keep it professional
- Adding headings are a great way to make your CV easy to read
- Avoid unprofessional fonts e.g. Comic Sans and avoid unprofessional layouts / colours
- Name your CV something personal e.g. ‘Jane Smith – 2023 CV’ opposed to ‘Document 1
