Is This The Year For A Big Change?
Perhaps 2021 represents the ideal year to make that change for the next job? It is safe to say that employers need to look after employees and vice versa.
According to a survey of 800 employees from management consultants, McKinsey, only one-third believed that their employers connect actions to a wider purpose. McKinsey recognised that employees “living their purpose” are more likely to enjoy being a part of the work culture. They also had four times higher engagement and five times higher well-being than the people who had no sense of connection to their work and their employer.
Sally Bennett, senior consultant, understands how people can evaluate what they want and be prepared to make that change, “There is a psychological contract and a commitment between an employer and employee. Many hours on video calls every day, can be exhausting. The long hour days can take their toll when home becomes work and everyday life. The past year has seen new ways of working. I am seeing a lot more people leaving market professions and applying within industries that reflect their values and work becomes more purpose-driven. For example, the NHS.”
Michelle Mitchell, operations manager, recognises the opportunity as businesses find their momentum again. “I believe that 2021 presents an opportunity for people to make a new step if they are aware of the balance they need and their own progression. It’s a slow process, but as companies find rhythm and growth again, this presents an attractive proposition for others.”
According to job site Monster’s UK Lockdown Survey, a third of participants want their next job in a new sector. Over 60% of people interviewed said they wanted “more meaningful” work.
Rob Bruce, senior recruitment consultant, has seen first hand the emphasis on meaningful work. “People are reflecting and making that change. I have spoken to people who are now setting up their own businesses and making that commitment to building their own commercial venture. As we all find our pace with 2021 we are going to find more people willing to do something different and also open to suggestions. The linear career path, where a job provided a means to move on up with more money, status or responsibility, will be a thing of the past.”
In the words of speaker and entrepreneur Jim Rohn, ‘either you run the day, or the day runs you.’ Perhaps 2021 is the year for change as the pandemic has made us all question career decisions now more than ever. If this year presents the time to reinvent your career, understand the work you want to do that can make a difference. Making the right choices can become one of the most rewarding things you do.
