Looking At The Clues For The Sectors Doing Well

Sectors are recovering and building their foundations for the rest of 2021 and beyond. Whilst the offline retail sector may not be the most dependable industry to put your career aspirations within at the moment and recent instances such as Debenhams closing all stores and 120,000 jobs at risk, there is the opportunity.

Vicki Reeks, highlights the importance to be tuned into the sectors doing well and to ‘find avenues.’ Vicki says, “there is an element of strategy when it comes to targeting your next role. For instance, we have seen the rise in roles related to ecommerce and this is reflected throughout the whole country.”

According to the Office for National Statistics (ONS) online retailers were, “reaching higher than usual levels over the course of the pandemic.” Buying online represented 28.5% of total sales in October 2020 compared to 20.1% last February.

In a recent article that highlighted the rise of the digital sector from a December Tech Nation report, it noted vacancies dropped in the UK during summer 2020. However, they have since grown 50 percent and are now increasing at a rate of 2.6 per month. This points to the strength of the UK digital sector, which now accounts for 10% of all UK job openings.

Vicki says, “Those companies who have been successful online, will continue to be buoyant. I would suggest a more proactive approach that looks at core skills rather than being industry specific.”

“For instance, if you have spent a number of years with a customer service role, those people skills and resolving any conflict can find a place within a sales role or even a technical support role. You have to look at the skills you have gained, not necessarily the industry you remained within. Flexibility is a huge asset to have.”

A recent survey from IBISworld presented the fastest growing industries in the UK for 2021. The top three were: safety equipment; CRM (customer relationship management) systems and online food ordering and delivery. Vicki says, “We are working with those businesses who are keeping the momentum and growing. My advice is to be targeted and look at the skills that a potential employer is looking for. Share the successes, the problems faced and the achievements that can put you in a healthy place for your next role.”
It is important to do the groundwork for the job that is ready for you now, as well as the opportunities that will arise in the coming years. It’s good to find the avenues that can support your career.
