What If You Don’t Have The Experience?

What If You Don’t Have The Experience?

It doesn’t feel good when you set your sights on a career that you know you will give you a huge amount of satisfaction, but you don’t quite have what it takes to get you over the finish line.

There is still an opportunity in applying, rather than thinking you have to lower your aspirations. Remember you’re not alone here, many people are going through this. You should not let a handful of qualifications stop you in your career tracks.

Some roles may ask for five or 10 years of experience, but what if you don’t have that? Lucy Eaton, Key Account Manager says, “ The ability to perform, the drive that you have and the skills you have accumulated can support you. You won’t be hired if you can’t perform what needs to get the job done. However, if you can demonstrate what you achieved that aligns with what a potential employer is looking for, it can support you.”

“For instance, you may have taken up voluntary work. Initiatives such as Young Enterprise are great to support leadership qualities. You may also have achieved tasks in other roles that have helped solve problems that can make a new employer sit up and take notice.”

From the Job Outlook 2020 report by NACE (National Association of Colleges and Employers), employers are looking for these top skills from graduates: problem-solving skills, ability to work in a team and a strong work ethic.

Lucy says, “An important thing to always remember is why you are going to be the perfect person for the role. Recognise what is being asked in the job description and look at what you have demonstrated over the years. What may not be an abundance of experience behind you, you can certainly show how you have been active and found other ways to support your capabilities. You don’t need to say the words, ‘I don’t have the right experience.’”

Applying for a job is the only way you will know if you are the right person for a new company. It helps when you are putting in the effort, demonstrate your key competencies and willing to learn and be a part of the field of expertise you see your future within.
